"ODM Sio Bibi Yako" Junet Changes Tune, Attacks Ruto About His Cooperative Talk

Suna East MP and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General, Junet Mohamed, has forcefully declared the party’s political autonomy, distancing it from perceptions of subservience to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.

The statement, delivered in a defiant mix of Kiswahili and English, follows growing internal unease over ODM’s recent parliamentary cooperation with the government on key legislative matters.

“ODM sio bibi ya Ruto (ODM is not Ruto’s wife),” Junet asserted, directly addressing critics within the party’s base who fear a dilution of its opposition identity.

While acknowledging a potential shift in strategy, Junet clarified that any support for President Ruto in the 2027 General Election would be conditional.

“Tunaweza kumuunga mkono 2027, lakini lazima tuketi kwa meza (We can support him in 2027, but we must sit at the table),” he stated. This emphasises that future alliances would require structured, formal negotiations.

Junet framed the party’s recent engagement with the government as tactical, not a surrender.

He argued that politics is driven by interests, not permanent loyalties, and that ODM’s core focus remains on alleviating the cost of living, promoting economic inclusion, and securing social justice for its supporters.

His remarks signal a strategic recalibration, positioning ODM as a potential power broker ahead of the next election.

By demanding “tangible commitments” for ordinary Kenyans in return for cooperation, the party seeks to clarify its long-term stance—whether to field its own presidential candidate, back Ruto, or form a broader coalition.

Ultimately, Junet’s declaration is a bid to reassure the party faithful while keeping ODM’s options open, navigating a complex political landscape where collaboration and opposition must be carefully balanced.
