"You Can't Impeach Sakaja Without Ruto's Approval," MCA Alai Says

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has stated that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja cannot be impeached without the consent of party principals.

Speaking on a local radio station on Thursday, December 18, 2025, Alai said both President William Ruto and ODM leadership must agree for the process to proceed.

Alai explained that this requirement for party approval has previously shielded Sakaja from impeachment attempts.

The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and President Ruto intervened to halt a motion that had already gained momentum in the Nairobi County Assembly.

He added that issues raised during a reconciliatory meeting between Sakaja, Azimio MCAs, and Raila Odinga at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation remain unaddressed.

The governor was previously given a 30-day ultimatum to resolve concerns raised by MCAs, but according to Alai, no meaningful action has been taken.

Alai also revealed that he recently briefed the President on the situation in Nairobi. He urged that the city’s governance challenges should not be allowed to escalate further.

These comments follow an attempted impeachment that was halted after Raila Odinga intervened.

At the time, MCAs had already gathered signatures to table a motion and forward it to the Senate.

The move sparked public debate over Odinga’s role, with some accusing him of double standards.

Critics argue that while he champions devolution, he blocked MCAs from exercising their constitutional oversight through impeachment.

Alai emphasized that party principals’ consent is a critical factor in any attempt to remove Sakaja. Without approval from Ruto and ODM leaders, the impeachment process cannot move forward.

This situation highlights the influence of political leadership in county-level governance matters. It also underscores the delicate balance between constitutional provisions and political interests.

As the debate continues, stakeholders are watching closely to see whether Sakaja will address the concerns raised.

Meanwhile, the role of party principals remains central to any future impeachment attempt.

The Nairobi County Assembly and citizens await clarity on how governance issues will be resolved.

The discussion raises broader questions about accountability, oversight, and political influence in Kenya’s devolved system.
