Parents in Mathira have a reason to smile after their Member of Parliament, Eric Wamumbi, announced that all public day secondary schools in the constituency will now be free of charge.

This comes after he officially removed the KSh1,000 termly fee that parents were required to pay.

Speaking during a public event, he said the move is aimed at easing the financial burden on families and ensuring that every child in Mathira can access education without worry.

“No child should miss school because of money,” he said. “Education is a right, not a privilege.”

The KSh1,000 fee was used to support school operations, but Wamumbi promised that his office will now cover the cost through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF). He added that this decision will benefit over 10,000 students in the area.

Many parents have welcomed the news with joy. “This is a big help,” said Mary Wanjiku, a mother of three. “Sometimes we had to borrow money to pay school fees. Now we can focus on other needs.”

Headteachers also praised the move, saying it will improve school attendance and reduce dropout rates.

They urged parents to take advantage of the opportunity and ensure their children stay in school.

This bold step by MP Wamumbi shows a strong commitment to education and the future of Mathira’s children. It is a clear message that no child should be left behind because of poverty.
