Kenya is facing fresh challenges after the United States pulled out of 66 international organisations, many of which support projects that directly affect the country.

The decision followed an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, January 7, after a review of America’s global engagements.

The move has affected agencies working in areas such as climate change, housing, gender equality, health, education, and security.

Several of these organisations operate under the United Nations system and have ongoing programs in Kenya.

One of the most affected bodies is the UN Human Settlements Programme, commonly known as UN-Habitat, which is headquartered in Nairobi.

The agency plays a key role in urban planning, affordable housing, and sustainable city development. Its presence in Kenya has also supported jobs, research, and partnerships with local and national governments.

The withdrawal has also affected UN Women, which supports programs aimed at reducing gender-based violence and promoting women’s economic and social rights.

These programs have been important in supporting community initiatives across different counties in Kenya.

Funding cuts were also announced for Education Cannot Wait, an organisation that supports learning for vulnerable children, including those affected by conflict and displacement.

The UN Population Fund has also been impacted, affecting programs on reproductive health, youth empowerment, and population data used for national planning.
