The battle for the Bungoma County Governor seat in 2027 is expected to be one of the most fierce political contests the county has ever witnessed.
After serving as Governor for two non- consecutive terms, incumbent Kenneth Lusaka is set to bow out in 2027, leaving the seat up for grabs.
Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi Wetangula is one of the front runners to succeed Lusaka, who also had a stint as Senate Speaker.
Having learnt all the political tricks in the capital city, the 62- year old Wanyonyi feels that he is ripe to lead his home county.
Wanyonyi has established himself as a political force. His longevity in Nairobi’s cut- throat politics attest to this.
For the three terms that he has served as Westlands MP, Wanyonyi has consistently been ranked as one of the top performing MPs in the country.
And seemingly, he is riding on his development track record to springboard his political ambitions.
In a county that has been dominated by Ford Kenya party which is led by his elder brother, the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Wanyonyi is keen to upset the status quo by winning the seat using ODM.
Wanyonyi's biggest rival for the position is the fiery Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, a key ally of President William Ruto.
There is no doubt that Barasa's political vehicle will be UDA.
If this happens, it will be a battle between UDA and ODM right at Wetangula's doorstep. But who will emerge victorious? Well, only time will tell.
