Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga is set to lead a major Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) rally at Nairobi’s historic Kamukunji Grounds on Wednesday, January 14.
The event, described as a consultative meeting, comes at a critical time for the party, which has been facing internal disagreements and leadership challenges.
Kamukunji Grounds is a symbolic site for ODM supporters. It is where the late Raila Odinga often addressed crowds and made important political announcements.
By holding the rally here, Oburu seems to honor Raila’s legacy while showing his commitment to shaping the party’s future.
Gabriel Oguda, a key member of the party’s National Dialogue Committee, shared details about the meeting, urging supporters to come early.
“The rally starts at 2 pm, but people can come as early as the night before to secure a place,” he said. “The crowd is expected to be huge, and seats will fill quickly.”
The rally comes just days after Oburu chaired a crucial ODM Central Management Committee meeting in Vipingo, Kilifi County.
The meeting focused on preparing the party for the 2027 General Election. One major decision from the meeting was to begin talks with other political parties, including William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), to explore possible coalitions.
Oburu was given the mandate to lead these discussions.
Oburu also addressed concerns about some senior party officials being absent from key meetings.
Analysts say this rally is part of a broader effort to reconnect with grassroots supporters and restore unity within the party.
The event is seen as both strategic and symbolic, signaling that ODM is ready to move forward despite internal divisions.
Reactions from Kenyans online have been mixed. Some critics questioned the need to ask people to arrive early, pointing out the hardships ordinary citizens face.
Others praised the rally as a step toward strengthening the party and preparing for future elections.
As ODM navigates leadership changes and positions itself for the 2027 elections, the Kamukunji rally is expected to be closely watched.
Political observers say it could shape the party’s strategy, demonstrate support at the grassroots level, and show how ODM plans to unify its members for the coming political battles.
