Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has issued a stern warning to President William Ruto, saying that just as he protected national exams from cheating, Kenyans’ votes will not be stolen in 2027.
Matiang’i spoke during a church service at PCEA Utawala in Embakasi on Sunday, February 22, 2026, alongside key figures from the United Alternative Government, including Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka.
He criticised what he described as the government’s misunderstanding of the country’s mood and highlighted recent security concerns.
“You position thugs, na police wanajua… if I was in Interior now, the regional police commander in Kisumu cannot tell me he did not know who was there,” Matiang’i said, referring to thugs allegedly stationed at Kisumu International Airport to target MPs.
Matiang’i called on President Ruto to act responsibly. “Do the right thing. It is very easy to do the right thing. Go, work, sit down, listen to people,” he advised, noting that church and community groups are important platforms for dialogue.
On electoral integrity, Matiang’i drew from his experience as Education Cabinet Secretary: “Finally, I protected the exam and it wasn’t stolen, you won’t steal our votes.”
In a post on X, Matiang’i further addressed the president directly, saying, “For the first time, let me say this openly… you have misread the mood of the country.” He said his experience in security gave him insight into intelligence assessments and public sentiment.
Matiang’i, recently endorsed by Jubilee as its 2027 presidential candidate, has increased his public appearances and openly criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration over security, health, and education issues.
He promised that if the United Alternative Government wins in 2027, it will ensure credible governance, prioritise key sectors, and involve young people, particularly Gen Z, in national decision-making.
