It's with great sadness that we share the news of Joyce Nzisa Mwongela's passing. She was the former wife of Johnson Muthama, and she passed on February 16, 2026, after being ill for a while.
The family plans to bury her on Friday, February 27, at her parents' place in Kilome, Kilungu, Makueni County. Right now, family and close friends are getting ready for the funeral, meeting at her home in Woodley.
Joyce leaves behind five daughters: Naomi, Alice, the late Janet, Margaret, and Patricia, all children she had with Muthama. This sad news comes just a week after they buried her son, Moses Muthama Nduya.
He was laid to rest at his father’s home in Tala, Kangundo Sub-county. This has been a tough time for the whole family.
She was the daughter of the late George Zakayo Mwongela and the late Mary Alice Nthoki Mwongela.
She was also a loving grandmother. Her siblings and in-laws will remember her as someone who really cared about her family, both near and far.
Outside of her family, Joyce was sometimes in the news because of a property disagreement with Muthama.
This legal issue started in the early 1990s and had to do with property they got when they were married.
The Court of Appeal decided in 2015 that they had already settled the issue.
In recent years, she stayed out of the spotlight. People who knew her well say she was strong, sure of herself, and really cared about her children.
Her death marks the close of a life that was all about family and, at times, public attention.
