Former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has launched a political comeback, a move widely seen as a major boost for former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i as realignments take shape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Machogu announced he will contest the Kisii County governorship for a second time, setting the stage for a high-stakes race while simultaneously throwing his weight behind Matiang’i’s growing national and regional political influence.

Speaking at a funeral in Bobasi Constituency, Machogu openly declared his support for Matiang’i, describing him as the most credible and courageous leader capable of rescuing Kenya from what he termed a deep political and economic crisis.

He praised Matiang’i’s track record in public service, portraying him as a firm, decisive and trustworthy leader, remarks that underscored a clear political alignment and signalled strengthening backing for Matiang’i within Kisii politics.

Machogu, who lost the 2022 Kisii governor race to Simba Arati, said the region was ready for new leadership, framing his renewed bid as part of a broader political shift anchored on Matiang’i’s leadership vision.

In a sharp turn against President William Ruto, whom he once supported, Machogu accused the government of misleading Kenyans with unfulfilled economic promises, claiming initiatives like Hustler Fund and other empowerment programs had failed citizens.

The former CS was dismissed from Cabinet following the June 2024 Gen Z protests, a move he blamed on political sabotage by Kisii-based UDA lawmakers after he allegedly refused to engage in corrupt tender dealings.

His public fallout with the ruling administration and strong endorsement of Matiang’i now position his comeback as both a local political gamble and a significant win for Matiang’i, who continues to consolidate influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
