South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro has turned a stinging political insult into a daring public statement.
Days after a hostile rally in Kisii County he appeared online wearing a cap branded with the words “Osoro N’Nyuma.” The phrase had been used to mock him in front of a huge crowd.
The chants erupted during a rally led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at Gusii Stadium.
Supporters shouted the slogan repeatedly as tensions rose in the packed venue. The phrase in Ekegusii suggests that Osoro is at the bottom or of little importance in local politics.
Videos from the rally spread quickly across social media. In some clips even the speaker on stage seemed surprised by the intensity of the chants. The slogan later found its way into football matches and street discussions across Kisii.
Osoro who is serving his second term as MP and also acts as National Assembly Chief Whip has remained a firm ally of President William Ruto. His loyalty to the current administration has drawn criticism from rivals.
During the rally he was dismissed as a young boy and accused of failing to represent the Abagusii community well.
Instead of firing back with anger Osoro chose a different path. He posted a photo of himself smiling beside two associates. All three wore caps printed with the same phrase that had been used against him.
The image showed them in a relaxed outdoor setting. They appeared cheerful and confident as they bumped fists beside a white car. The message was clear that he would not be shaken by public ridicule.
Political observers say the move could be strategic. By embracing the insult he reduces its sting and shifts attention back to himself. Some believe this approach may strengthen his support base as the country slowly moves toward the 2027 election season.
Osoro has faced pressure before. During protests against the 2024 Finance Bill angry residents reportedly threatened his property after he supported the legislation. He has also spoken in the past about enduring harsh insults while remaining focused on his work.
For now the branded caps have sparked debate across Kisii and beyond.
Whether the bold gamble will boost his popularity or deepen divisions remains uncertain. What is clear is that Osoro has chosen to own the narrative rather than run from it.
