Senior Counsel Paul Muite has expressed concerns after National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula suspended Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi for claiming the House had been “auctioned”.
Kibagendi alleged that a powerful individual has taken over parliament and is now directing and telling members what to do.
According to reports, ruling that the MP's remarks tarnished Parliament's dignity, Wetang'ula ordered Kibagendi's immediate exclusion from sittings, committees, and precincts until he submits a properly worded apology.
The move caught politicians' and leaders' attention, with reactions on social media.
Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna, on X (formerly Twitter), said the Speaker was restricting free speech, adding it wasn't okay. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino called Kibagendi's suspension trumped-up charges.
SC Paul Muite joined others speaking up, saying in a free and fair referendum, Kenyans might share Kibagendi's opinion.
He added constitutional freedoms of thought and expression should be balanced against perceived transgressions, urging the Speaker to reconsider the decision.
