Former Chief Justice David Maraga faced chaos in Tharaka Nithi County after his convoy was attacked by a group of youths.

Maraga was in the county on Tuesday, February 17, to popularise his United Green Movement party and encourage voter registration among young people. His visit included a stop near Tharaka University.

Trouble started when a group of students blocked the road as his convoy approached. The youths began throwing stones at the vehicles, forcing his security team to act quickly. The situation became tense within minutes.

Due to safety concerns, Maraga was forced to cut short his activities and leave the area. No serious injuries were reported, but the incident disrupted his campaign schedule.

The protesting youths claimed they were defending the political interests of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. They insisted that Tharaka Nithi is loyal to Kindiki and the Kenya Kwanza administration. They opposed leaders campaigning against the current government in the region.

After the incident, Maraga linked the attack to political intolerance. He accused supporters of President William Ruto of trying to intimidate opposition voices. He maintained that his movement would not be shaken by threats or violence.

Maraga urged young people to register as voters and take part in shaping the country’s future through peaceful and lawful means. He said political competition should be based on ideas and policies, not confrontation.
