"Who is Stealing From Its People?" Kenya Vs Burkina Faso Road Construction Project Costs Raises Questions

Constitutional lawyer and politician Dr. Ekuru Aukot has stirred national outrage with an X post comparing Kenya's Rironi-Mau Summit Highway to Burkina Faso's Ouagadougou-Bobo-Dioulasso expressway, questioning "Who is stealing from its people?"

The viral table highlights stark contrasts: Burkina's 332km, 8-lane dual carriageway costs KES 46 billion (about $357 million), fully government-funded without debt, using local engineers.

In contrast, Kenya's 175km, 4-6 lane project is pegged at KES 200 billion under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) led by France's Vinci Highways, likely involving tolls.

However, beyond the humor, the episode sheds light on deeper tensions within ODM. Since the passing of Raila Odinga, the party has been navigating internal divisions and questions about leadership direction.

Oburu, as one of the senior party figures, now faces the challenge of uniting a movement that has historically thrived on its founder’s charisma and vision.

Analysts note that while his experience is undeniable, younger factions within ODM are increasingly vocal about strategy, alliances, and the party’s path to 2027.

Oburu defended his remarks, emphasizing the party’s need to remain politically relevant and maintain a strong voice in national affairs.

“Power is not just about positions; it is about the ability to influence policy for the people,” he said in a follow-up statement.

Political observers say the viral clip is emblematic of a larger reality: Kenyan politics now operates in an environment where even serious messages are instantly scrutinized and amplified online.

For Oburu and ODM, the challenge will be balancing grassroots messaging with the expectations of a digital-savvy electorate, all while steering the party toward cohesion and strategic impact in the lead-up to the next general election.
