Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga was overcome with emotion during a key gathering of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), as party leaders and supporters reflected on the legacy of the late Raila Odinga.

The moment happened during the ODM Special Delegates Convention held at the Jamhuri Expo Centre. The event marked a major transition for the party following Odinga’s death, with Oburu Odinga formally taking over as the new party leader.

As proceedings continued, a song known to have been one of Raila Odinga’s favourites was played. The music quickly changed the mood in the hall.

Many leaders and supporters were visibly moved as memories of the long-time opposition figure resurfaced.

Gladys Wanga stood out as she struggled to hold back tears. She wiped her face several times, clearly overwhelmed by the moment. Her reaction reflected the deep personal and political connection many in the party had with the late leader.

Nearby, Oburu Odinga appeared quiet and reflective. He remained composed but showed signs of grief as he listened. The emotional atmosphere spread across the venue, with delegates dressed in ODM colours sharing in the sense of loss.

The convention itself was significant for the party. It came at a time when ODM is facing internal pressure and growing divisions. Questions about leadership direction and future alliances have created tension among members.

Different groups within the party have taken separate positions on how ODM should relate with the current government. These differences have led to disagreements that are now playing out in public.
