Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto and Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho alleging that Kenya’s leadership is compromised by individuals linked to drug trafficking.
The remarks made during a public address have intensified political tensions as early discussions surrounding the 2027 general election begin to take shape.
Gachagua claimed that Kenya is the only country in the world where two alleged drug barons sit in the Cabinet a statement that immediately stirred controversy across the political landscape.
In his remarks the former Deputy President directly criticized both President Ruto and Joho suggesting that their leadership raises serious concerns about integrity and governance.
According to Gachagua, he has also received reports that President Ruto is considering appointing Joho as his running mate in the 2027 presidential election.
The claim though unconfirmed has fueled speculation about possible political alliances ahead of the next electoral cycle.
If such a partnership were to materialize it would represent a major shift in Kenya’s political dynamics.
Joho who currently serves as Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs has long been a prominent political figure from the coastal region.
Over the years he has faced repeated allegations related to narcotics trafficking accusations he has consistently denied.
Despite the controversies Joho remains influential in coastal politics and continues to maintain a strong support base.
Gachagua’s criticism appears to be part of a broader political offensive against the current administration following his fallout with President Ruto.
Since leaving office as Deputy President he has increasingly positioned himself as a vocal critic of the government accusing it of failing to uphold transparency and accountability.
Political analysts say the remarks could further deepen divisions within Kenya’s political class as the country gradually shifts its focus toward the 2027 elections.
However supporters of the government have dismissed Gachagua’s claims as politically motivated attacks aimed at damaging the reputations of key leaders.
Neither President Ruto nor Joho had publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
