Thousands of residents gathered at Tononoka Grounds on Sunday as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna addressed a charged opposition rally in Mombasa.

The event was organised under the Linda Mwananchi movement and quickly turned into a dramatic political moment. Supporters filled the grounds early while chanting slogans and waving placards that praised the outspoken senator.

The atmosphere became tense when rumours spread that police could disrupt the gathering. Sifuna walked to the podium and confronted the situation head on.

His bold words electrified the rally. “If you have teargas throw it now. I have given you the chance,” he declared. The crowd burst into loud cheers and chants as the senator stood calmly before them. After a brief pause he said the time he had given for disruption was over and he continued his speech with even greater energy.

Sifuna used the moment to sharply criticise President William Ruto. He accused the government of failing to fulfil promises made to residents at the Coast.

According to the senator many families in Mombasa are still waiting for land title deeds that were pledged during campaigns and public meetings.

The senator reminded the audience that several ceremonies were held to distribute title deeds in areas such as Chaani and Changamwe.

He argued that only a small number of residents received the documents while thousands of long time occupants remain uncertain about the land they live on.

Standing beside other opposition figures including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Sifuna urged supporters to organise for political change before the next general election.

He told the crowd that the struggle for title deeds represents a wider fight for dignity and economic security for ordinary citizens.

Political observers say the rally signals growing pressure on the ruling Kenya Kwanza alliance. The Linda Mwananchi movement has recently held similar gatherings in places like Narok, Kitengela and Kakamega where some events ended with police using teargas to disperse crowds.

Despite that history the rally in Mombasa continued with strong energy. Many participants said they would not be intimidated by threats or disruption.

The Nairobi senator who also serves as Secretary General of Orange Democratic Movement insisted that leaders must honour promises made to citizens. As chants echoed across Tononoka Grounds the message from the rally was clear and loud.
