Opinion: Why Johana Ngeno's Wife Nayia Ntutu is Unfit For Emurua Dikirr Constituency Seat

In Kenya, when a politician dies, their position often becomes another “inheritance” for spouses, children, or close family members.

When former Baringo senator William Cheptumo died, his wife was soon after appointed to the cabinet. When Ongondo Were passed away, a by-election saw his son, Boyd Were, take over.

When former Sotik constituency MP Lorna Laboso died, her sister Joyce Laboso took over, among many other cases . It is usually out of sympathy and the hope that these positions will help stabilize the bereaved family.

The death of Emurua Dikirr MP Johanna Ngeno has seen many push for his young wife to take over the mantle. However, the odds are stacked against her, and below are three reasons why Nayia Ntutu is not fit to be Emurua Dikirr MP.

Although Emurua Dikirr is a border constituency between the Maasai and the Kipsigis, the Kipsigis are the majority and the Maasai minority. It is a volatile constituency and as witnessed before , the late MP often clashed with other leaders and even the police.Nayia is a Maasai making her the minority.

Nayia Ntutu is young, and political drama in such a constituency could distract her from her career and young family. If anything, she might be better suited for a position far from local politics.

Emurua Dikirr has a history of ethnic clashes between the Maasai and Kipsigis. In such events, she could find herself at a crossroads, potentially seen as a traitor by either community.

Professionally, Nayia is a lawyer, and her personality suggests she is not a loud public figure. She would likely thrive more in a calmer role, away from the political noise and chaos.
