The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has strongly criticized the Principal of Kangundo DEB Secondary School for his behavior during the burial of a late teacher, Michael Wambua.
Reports indicate that the teacher had faced serious health issues and received warnings while battling life-threatening conditions.
KUPPET described the principal’s actions as insensitive, inhumane, and unprofessional. The union said that such behavior amounts to psychological torture and violates the dignity and welfare of teachers.
According to a statement from KUPPET’s Machakos branch, the principal’s conduct during the burial at Masewani Village in Kangundo caused deep concern among teachers and the community.
“We condemn the insensitive and unprofessional behavior shown during the burial. Teachers deserve respect, and their welfare must be a priority,” the statement read.
In response to the situation, KUPPET officials visited the school to support the grieving teachers. They also arranged transport for colleagues who wanted to pay their last respects to Michael Wambua.
The union emphasized that teachers should not face harassment or mistreatment, especially during difficult personal times such as the loss of a colleague.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges in some schools where teacher welfare is not always prioritized. KUPPET has called on school principals and education authorities to uphold professional conduct and treat teachers with dignity.
The union added that any form of intimidation or psychological pressure is unacceptable and must be addressed immediately.
Michael Wambua’s death has deeply affected the school community. Many teachers, students, and local residents attended the burial to honor his life and contributions to education.
KUPPET has urged schools to create supportive environments for teachers, ensuring their mental and emotional well-being.
The union also warned that it will take firm action against any school management that mistreats teachers. KUPPET continues to advocate for policies that protect teachers from harassment, unfair treatment, and unsafe working conditions.
