There is now a big crisis in many schools in Kenya because Grade 10 STEM learners in the sciences pathway are going without teachers. This has made parents, students, and even education officers very worried.

These learners are in a very important year, and subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics need proper teachers to guide them. Without teachers, students are finding it very hard to understand the lessons.

Parents are very angry and frustrated. They say that their children are losing important time for learning, and this can make them fail exams or perform badly. Some parents have even gone to the schools asking the headteachers to act fast.

They say learners cannot just study alone because science topics are too hard. For example, in Chemistry, students need teachers to explain chemical reactions and how experiments work.

In Physics, formulas and calculations are difficult to learn without someone teaching step by step. Even in Biology, practicals and experiments need a teacher to guide learners, and without that, students cannot understand well.

The school heads have said that this problem is because of teacher shortage. Some teachers were transferred to other schools, some are on leave, and some resigned.

The government has been very slow to replace them, leaving students with no lessons. In schools that still have teachers, there are too few, so they cannot cover all classes. This means some STEM classes are going for many days without any teacher at all.

The learners are also very worried. They say exams are coming, and without proper teachers, it will be very hard to pass. Some have tried to form study groups and help each other, but they admit this is not enough.

Teachers are very important because they can explain difficult topics, solve doubts, and show students how to do experiments. Without that, students feel lost and stressed.

Education officers have promised to fix the problem, but parents are saying promises are not enough.

They want urgent action. They want the government to hire more teachers quickly, send substitutes fast, and make sure every class has a proper teacher.

If this crisis continues, it will affect the students’ future. Grade 10 is very important, and STEM sciences learners need proper lessons, guidance, and support to succeed.

Parents, teachers, and the community are now asking for fast action so that learners can go back to normal learning, do experiments, understand science well, and be ready for exams without losing time.
