When a helicopter crashed in Chepkiep, Rubet Location, Kurkung/Surungai Ward in Mosop Constituency, Nandi County, panic and smoke filled the air. Residents watched in horror as flames rose from the wreckage.

Among them was a registered nurse, Eucabet Jeptoo, who had been relaxing at home when the explosion shattered the calm.

Without hesitation, she ran toward the crash site with her mother.

Realizing she would need protection, Eucabet rushed back home, grabbed her gloves and mask, and returned to the burning debris.

It was a scene no medical training can truly prepare someone for — twisted metal, thick smoke, and victims with devastating burns.

Still, she did what nurses are trained to do: she tried. She assessed the injured, searched for signs of life, and fought against time and the severity of the injuries.

Despite her best efforts, the burns were too extensive. One by one, the victims succumbed.

As emergency crews were yet to fully take control of the scene, Eucabet’s mother stepped forward in her own quiet act of humanity.

Using a simple leso, she covered the bodies to preserve their dignity. Then she stood there and prayed — for the departed, for their families, and for a shaken community trying to process what had just happened.

In moments of disaster, heroism is not always loud. Sometimes it is a nurse running toward danger while others flee. Sometimes it is a mother shielding the fallen from public glare and whispering prayers into the wind.

Eucabet Jeptoo may not have been able to save lives that day, but she honored them with courage and compassion. For many in Mosop, she and her mother represent the very best of humanity in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
