Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has claimed that Gladys Wanga is positioning herself to become the deputy president in the 2027 General Election under President William Ruto.

Speaking during a morning interview on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Maanzo argued that Wanga’s recent political activities within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) indicate her ambition to occupy the second-highest office in the country.

According to the senator, the Homa Bay governor has intensified her engagements within the party as part of a broader strategy to strengthen her position ahead of expected coalition talks between ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

“Governor Wanga is positioning herself to be the deputy president of William Ruto, and that’s why she is working so hard,” Maanzo stated during the interview.

The lawmaker further argued that ODM should not necessarily depend on UDA to form the next government. He maintained that if the party is seeking the deputy president’s position in a coalition arrangement, it should firmly demand the slot.

“ODM doesn’t need UDA for 2027, and that’s why they are demanding the DP seat. If they are not given it, then what business do they have with UDA? It would be better if they formed a government by themselves,” he said.

Maanzo’s remarks come amid growing debate over the possible political alliance between ODM and UDA ahead of the 2027 polls.

The question of who would occupy the deputy president’s position has emerged as one of the key sticking points in the anticipated negotiations.

Recently, ODM leader Oburu Odinga indicated that the party remains interested in the deputy president’s seat despite earlier remarks suggesting otherwise. He said the position is a public office and therefore open for political competition.

However, leaders from the Mount Kenya region allied to UDA have insisted that the deputy president’s position is not negotiable.

The debate highlights the growing political manoeuvring as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
