The coastal city of Mombasa came alive on Sunday as hundreds of residents thronged Tononoka Grounds, chanting the now-familiar "Wantam" slogan while receiving Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
The atmosphere was electric from the moment the two opposition leaders arrived.
The convoy, adorned with party regalia, was met by a sea of supporters singing the popular political anthem that has become synonymous with anti-government sentiment.
"Wantam! Wantam!" the crowd roared in unison, a chant widely interpreted as a demand for a one-term presidency and a declaration that the current administration has overstayed its welcome.
Many residents waved tree branches and placards bearing messages of economic distress and political change.
Security was notably heavy along the route leading to Tononoka Grounds, but the mood remained largely celebratory.
Residents danced on the streets, blocking sections of major roads as they escorted the leaders to the venue.
Sifuna, who serves as the ODM party Secretary General, was seen pumping his fist from the sunroof of his vehicle, while Babu Owino acknowledged the chants with dramatic gestures, whipping the crowd into further frenzy.
The Tononoka rally is seen as a significant test of the opposition's resolve in the coastal region, historically a key political battleground.
As the leaders took to the podium, the chants grew louder, signaling a tense and charged political season ahead. No arrests were reported as the crowd dispersed peacefully in the evening.
