Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of planning to remove business people from the GEMA community from Nairobi through ongoing demolitions.
Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, March 10, Gachagua claimed that the recent destruction of structures in several parts of the city was not a normal enforcement exercise.
He alleged that the demolitions were part of a wider political plan aimed at weakening the influence of the GEMA community in the capital.
GEMA refers to people from the Gikuyu, Embu and Meru communities. According to Gachagua, many traders and small business owners from these communities operate in busy areas such as Githurai, Roysambu and other markets across Nairobi.
He said intelligence reports indicated that the government intends to remove many of these traders from their workplaces.
The former deputy president claimed the businesses were being destroyed so that the owners would be forced to return to their rural homes.
