President William Ruto is expected to make a high-profile appearance at the Nairobi County Assembly next week, a move that is already stirring political debate within the capital and beyond.

His planned visit comes just days after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja unveiled a controversial Sh80 billion cooperation agreement with the national government.

The deal, which is aimed at improving service delivery in the city, has drawn mixed reactions from leaders and residents alike, with some questioning its transparency and long-term implications.

According to officials familiar with the matter, Ruto’s visit will focus on strengthening collaboration between the national and county governments, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, waste management, and urban planning.

Nairobi, being the country’s economic hub, has been a key priority for the administration, especially as pressure mounts to address long-standing challenges like traffic congestion and poor drainage.

However, critics argue that the timing of the President’s visit raises eyebrows. A section of leaders within the county assembly has already expressed concern over the Sh80 billion deal, claiming they were not adequately consulted.

Others have called for full disclosure of the agreement before any further commitments are made.

Political analysts say the President’s presence at the assembly could serve two purposes: reassuring skeptical leaders while also consolidating support for the partnership with Sakaja’s administration.

It also comes at a time when national politics remain tense, with various factions closely watching any alliances forming at the county level.

For Nairobi residents, the focus remains on whether the deal—and the President’s involvement—will translate into tangible improvements in daily life. As the visit approaches, expectations are high, but so is scrutiny.
