Nyamira County residents are still in shock after a terrifying event where a 96-year-old Catholic grandmother was attacked by a gang of three men in her home late at night.
The suspects, now in police custody, committed the crime despite the woman praying for their mercy.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the elderly woman welcomed the intruders with a heartfelt prayer.
She hoped her words of faith would stop them from harming her. For a brief moment, it seemed her prayers had worked, as the men paused and bowed their heads.
But soon after, they destroyed her property and stole her belongings.
The attackers, identified as William Obiero Gekonge, James Mogaka Otego, and Justus Ondieki Nyabuto, went through the grandmother’s house, consuming food and milk she relied on for her medicine.
They then stole all electronic devices they could find and escaped on a motorcycle.
Investigations by the DCI show that this gang has been involved in several violent crimes in both Nyamira and Kisii counties.
The trio is linked to robberies, sexual assaults, and defilement cases, leaving residents fearful and anxious.
Police from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau conducted a careful operation to track the suspects.
Their work led to the arrest of all three men. Authorities recovered stolen household items and the motorcycle used in the crime.
The suspects are being held in custody and will soon face court on multiple charges, including robbery and sexual offenses.
The police have also said that further investigations are ongoing to target other criminal gangs operating in the area.
This shocking incident has brought attention to the risks elderly people face, especially in rural areas.
Residents are calling for stronger security measures to protect vulnerable citizens. Community leaders have urged authorities to act quickly to prevent such crimes from happening again.
The grandmother, though shaken, expressed hope that justice will be done. Many locals have praised her courage and the resilience she showed by remaining calm during the ordeal.
