Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is secretly coordinating with the United Opposition ahead of the next general election, a senior opposition official has claimed.
Peter Mbae, Secretary for Planning and Economic Affairs of the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), told K24 on Tuesday that Sifuna is actively working to help the opposition secure the presidency.
Mbae alleged that Sifuna’s ongoing political tours are part of a deliberate strategy to confuse rivals from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
“You will see people moving around differently… Martha Karua there, Fred Matiang’i there, and Sifuna here. By the time you target Rigathi [Gachagua], Kalonzo comes up,” Mbae said.
He insisted that despite appearing to operate separately, opposition leaders including DCP’s Rigathi Gachagua and PLP’s Martha Karua are united.
Mbae urged Kenyans to be patient, adding that the opposition’s joint presidential candidate will be announced no earlier than May next year.
The claims come even as Sifuna and his Linda Mwananchi team, which includes Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, insist they remain members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
They have publicly rejected the party’s official position to endorse President William Ruto’s re-election bid, insisting ODM should field its own candidate.
Sifuna has yet to directly respond to Mbae’s allegations.
The development points to deepening fissures within ODM and mounting speculation about a broad opposition realignment ahead of the next polls.
