Tension is brewing in western Kenya after the Luhya Council of Elders launched a blistering attack on Oburu Oginga, accusing him of poor leadership and sidelining key communities in crucial political decisions.
In a strongly worded statement that has since sparked heated debate, the elders claimed that the veteran politician has failed to unite the region and instead pursued interests that do not reflect the aspirations of the people on the ground.
Speaking during a consultative meeting, the elders said the time had come for leaders to prioritize inclusivity, transparency, and equitable resource sharing.
They argued that the region has been left behind in development, despite promises made during previous political negotiations.
According to them, residents are frustrated by what they termed as “empty rhetoric” and a lack of tangible progress.
The council further demanded immediate dialogue between regional leaders to address simmering discontent.
Among their key demands were fair political representation, structured consultations before major decisions, and a clear roadmap on economic empowerment programs targeting youth and women.
They warned that continued exclusion could weaken unity and cost the region politically in future contests.
The elders also called on Oburu Oginga to clarify his recent political moves, saying they had raised eyebrows among supporters who expected broader consultations.
They insisted that leadership must reflect collective will, not individual preferences.
Political observers say the sharp remarks signal growing dissatisfaction and could reshape alliances ahead of upcoming political activities.
Some leaders within the region have already urged calm, calling for dialogue instead of public confrontation.
However, the Luhya Council of Elders remained firm, saying their statement reflects the mood on the ground.
They emphasized that their push is not personal but aimed at securing fair treatment, unity, and meaningful development for the region moving forward.
