Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made it clear that he wants to lead a united opposition against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on a local TV show, Gachagua urged all opposition leaders to agree on one candidate to challenge Ruto, stating that he is the best choice for the role.

“We need one candidate to face William Ruto. I will talk to my colleagues and ask them to publicly commit to support the chosen person. Anyone who goes against this will be betraying the people. I believe I am that candidate,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua’s remarks come at a time when political tensions in Kenya are high. He was impeached in October 2024, and his relationship with President Ruto has been tense ever since.

Since then, he has spoken out against the Ruto administration, criticizing its economic policies, high taxes, and failure to address the needs of ordinary Kenyans.

The former deputy president’s plan involves bringing together several opposition figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah.

Gachagua stressed that all leaders should commit to supporting one candidate to ensure unity and discipline within the opposition.

Gachagua has also gained strong support in the Mount Kenya region, where many residents feel disappointed by the current government’s policies.

In May 2025, he launched the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which has been growing in popularity. His party’s slogan, “Skiza Wakenya,” reflects his message of listening to the people and putting their concerns first.

Political analysts say Gachagua’s bold move may reshape the opposition landscape in Kenya. By calling for a united front, he aims to prevent divisions that could weaken the challenge against President Ruto.

Supporters believe his approach could give the opposition a stronger chance in the next election, while critics question whether all leaders will agree to step aside for a single candidate.
