Demonstrations have slowly begun taking shape at the iconic Archives roundabout in Nairobi's Central Business District on Tuesday April 21 2026 as young Kenyans mobilise under the hashtag RejectFuelPrices to protest soaring fuel costs that have pushed up the cost of living for millions of households.

The build-up has been cautious rather than explosive with scattered groups of youths spotted holding small Kenyan flags and chanting briefly near the Archives area while the broader CBD continues operating at near-normal capacity.

A major development came with the arrest of renowned activist Julius Kamau who was detained during the early stages of the mobilisation.

Kamau is well known for his frontline advocacy on governance and economic justice and his arrest has already ignited fierce debate online about the suppression of dissent in Kenya.

Nairobi Regional Commander Issa Mohamud had declared the planned protests unlawful ahead of Tuesday citing the organisers' failure to serve the mandatory 14-day notice under the Public Order Act. Anti-riot units were pre-positioned across the city in the days leading up to the demonstrations.

NTV's live updates from the ground described minimal police presence with the CBD largely operating normally. Pedestrians were navigating wet pavements following morning drizzle while matatus and private vehicles flowed with minimal disruption and street vendors continued their business as usual.

The protests were triggered by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority's decision to hike pump prices effective April 16 with the increases set to last until May 14.

Many Kenyans took to social media to condemn what they described as an unbearable additional burden on already stretched household budgets.

Opposition voices and grassroots activists had called for nationwide action targeting Archives City Hall and Parliament as key demonstration points.

However the combination of police warnings heavy security deployment and morning rains appeared to temper turnout significantly.

Public sentiment remains divided. Many commuters expressed frustration over rising transport fares caused by the fuel price increases but voiced caution given memories of past demonstrations that turned violent and destructive.

Security sources indicate that plain-clothes officers are actively monitoring hotspots across the city though no water cannons or tear gas units had been deployed at Archives as of the time of reporting.

Whether today's cautious build-up escalates into wider action as the day progresses or fades under official pressure remains the key question as Nairobi watches and waits.
