Speaking during a radio interview on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Sifuna said his political focus remains on strengthening ODM as a lasting institution capable of outliving individual leaders.
According to him, ODM represents one of the most significant political legacies of former party leader Raila Odinga, particularly in advancing multiparty democracy in Kenya.
Sifuna stated that political parties should be structured to endure beyond their founders, emphasizing continuity and internal democracy as key pillars of ODM’s future.
He added that his previous remarks at Raila Odinga’s burial reflected his genuine beliefs about the direction the party should take.
He also revealed that he had been willing to step aside from his role as Secretary General if the party leadership deemed it necessary.
Sifuna said he would have formally communicated his readiness to resign to senior party officials, including Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga.
His comments come at a time when ODM is experiencing internal divisions over leadership direction and political alignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Competing factions have emerged within the party, with differing views on cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza administration and the future structure of opposition politics.
Sifuna has been closely associated with the more vocal reform-oriented faction within ODM, which has pushed for internal restructuring and greater accountability.
This camp argues that the party must remain firmly in opposition and avoid close alignment with the ruling coalition.
The debate over ODM’s future has intensified following reduced day-to-day involvement of senior leadership in party operations, creating space for emerging leaders to shape the direction of the organization.
