A fresh wave of defections has hit ODM in Kwale County. Several party leaders and members have crossed over to the fast growing Linda Mwananchi movement this morning.
The defectors announced their move in Kwale and quickly named former Matuga MP Hassan Mwanyoha as their interim chairperson. Mwanyoha was until recently the ODM county chairperson before he switched sides.
His appointment marks a big blow for ODM in a region long seen as its stronghold. Kwale has now become another battleground in the widening rift within the party.
This is not the first time ODM has bled support in the county. Back in August members already broke away and pledged loyalty to Linda Mwananchi. They spoke openly about frustration with the party's current direction.
Some accused the leadership of straying from ideals once championed by the late Raila Odinga. Others called for fresh leadership that could restore hope among ordinary members.
Mwanyoha has not been a stranger to the movement. In July Siaya Governor James Orengo praised a warm welcome he received from a Kwale delegation that included Mwanyoha during a coastal tour.
Linda Mwananchi is closely linked to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna alongside other figures such as Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. The outfit has been crossing counties gathering support ahead of the 2027 general election.
Despite facing hurdles around official registration the movement keeps pulling in new members from various political camps. Many see it as a fresh option away from both government and the old opposition.
With a major Nairobi tour planned this weekend Linda Mwananchi shows no signs of slowing down.
The Kwale defection adds more weight to its growing influence across the Coast region and beyond.
