All political eyes have been directed in Siaya county following a fresh development where former two time governor Cornell Rasanga declared bid to unseat incumbent Oburu Oginga in the upcoming 2027 Senatorial race.

What caught the eyes of many is that Mr Rasanga made the announcement at an event attended by the incumbent senator and ODM party leader Oburu Oginga.

After Oburu left the meeting in a huff, Rasanga did not waste time, he openly announced to the people that he is going for the Siaya Senate seat.

The declaration directly places Mr Rasanga in opposition with Mr Oburu Oginga who is naturally expected to defend his seat having not made any statements announcing his exit from the position as of now.

Rasanga is a long time ODM stalwart who served as Migori county governor since 2013 to 2022. Since his exit from office, he has been maintaining a low political profile. He emerged from the blues to make the comeback announcement.

The constitutional requirement capping the total years governors can hold office to ten has seen big political moguls hit a dead end at the end of their two terms.

At the end of their two terms, governors can only run for Parliamentary positions, be appointed to Cabinet positions or other appointive positions if the parties they support win power.

Rasanga, Sospeter Ojamong and Okoth Obado are some of the former governors seeking to bounce back to the national scene by going for the parliamentary positions.
