Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has revealed the pivotal role retired President Uhuru Kenyatta played in Raila Odinga’s 2022 presidential campaign. The disclosure came during a burial ceremony in Nairobi on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

Speaking at the funeral of Alice Wangari Gakuya, mother to Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, Sifuna emphasized Uhuru’s financial and logistical backing.

He said the support enabled ODM to run a robust campaign in regions traditionally challenging for Raila.

Kwa mara ya kwanza, Raila Odinga alizoa kura zaidi ya milioni moja kutoka Mlima Kenya, Sifuna stated.

He credited Uhuru’s direct involvement for this unprecedented performance, noting that other campaign players failed to manage funds efficiently.

Sifuna described the support as both material and strategic, allowing ODM to cover costs for rallies, transport, grassroots mobilization, and campaign logistics. He stressed that such backing was critical to the party’s competitiveness in 2022.

“Mimi najua kama Katibu Mkuu wa ODM, pesa nyingi tulizotumia kwenye kampeni zilikuwa zinatoka kwa Uhuru Kenyatta.

Alitusupport kwa hali na mali, ni ukweli,” Sifuna affirmed, highlighting Uhuru’s deliberate commitment to Raila’s campaign.

The SG’s remarks shed new light on the behind-the-scenes alliances that shaped Kenya’s 2022 elections.

Analysts say Uhuru’s involvement in the campaign may have shifted voter dynamics in favor of ODM in key constituencies.

Sifuna also hinted at internal mismanagement by some agents who mishandled campaign funds, contrasting their approach with Uhuru’s direct support.

He suggested that disciplined and well-coordinated backing made all the difference in Mt Kenya.

Observers note that Sifuna’s revelations come amid ongoing discussions about party funding transparency and the influence of former presidents in shaping political outcomes. The SG’s comments may reignite debates over campaign finance in Kenya.

The ceremony, attended by political leaders and local residents, offered Sifuna a platform to reflect on both personal loss and political history.

His tribute intertwined the mourning of a respected matriarch with acknowledgment of strategic political partnerships.
