Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked national debate after remarks interpreted as targeting the Luo community, suggesting they are easily swayed by “big things,” citing Singapore as an example.

His comments have drawn criticism from political leaders, analysts, and the public, who describe them as disrespectful and divisive.

Gachagua, now leading the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), criticised President William Ruto’s frequent references to transforming Kenya into a nation like Singapore.

He said the government has failed to deliver tangible results while using grand narratives to impress voters.

He added that political promises about ambitious projects are often used to mislead citizens, particularly communities attracted to large-scale ideas rather than concrete progress.

Opposition leaders condemned Gachagua’s remarks, calling them insulting and stereotyping. They said the Luo community is politically aware and should not be portrayed as easily misled.

Analysts warn that such language risks inflaming ethnic tensions in a country where politics is highly sensitive to community identities.

Supporters of Gachagua argue his comments were misinterpreted. They say he was critiquing unrealistic political promises rather than any specific community.

They insist his point was about holding leaders accountable for grandiose statements that do not translate into real change.

Political analysts say the controversy reflects the heightened scrutiny of political rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general election.

They note that careless statements about communities distract from urgent issues like economic recovery, high living costs, and governance reforms. Citizens demand leaders focus on policies rather than identity-based narratives.

Gachagua continues to present his campaign as one focused on accountability.

He has criticised initiatives such as the Social Health Authority, calling them costly and poorly executed, and has called for stronger reforms in systems like the National Health Insurance Fund.

Reactions from rivals have been swift. Some dismiss the remarks as politically motivated, while others warn they could polarise voters.

The public has increasingly called for debate to focus on real issues rather than community stereotypes or rhetoric.

The controversy over Gachagua’s Singapore and Luo remarks underscores the sensitivity of Kenya’s political discourse.

It highlights the need for leaders to prioritise issue-based politics and respect for all communities. Citizens are demanding accountability, unity, and leadership that rises above division.
