The BBC News Africa has finally spoken ahead of Uganda’s coming elections on 15 January 2025, and its words have sparked serious debate across the country and beyond.

For a long time, the international news network had remained quiet. Now, it has shared its view on Uganda’s two main political figures: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his strongest challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine.

In its analysis, BBC News Africa highlighted a key issue facing Uganda today, which is President Museveni’s long stay in power.

According to the BBC, most Ugandans have never known another leader.

“Ugandans under the age of 40 and that is more than three-quarters of the population have only known one president.

Yoweri Museveni seized the top job in 1986 following an armed uprising and at the age of 81, he shows no signs of budging.”

When it came to Bobi Wine, the tone changed.

The BBC described him as a strong and fresh force in Ugandan politics.

“With his charisma, tenacity and everyman appeal, music star Bobi Wine has shaken up Ugandan politics.

Since his career pivot a decade ago, the 43-year-old has become a major thorn in the side of President Museveni, who has been in power for 40 years.”

To many readers, this sounded like praise for a man seen as the face of change.

Looking at both statements, many observers believe the message is clear: BBC News Africa appears to support political change in Uganda.

While the broadcaster did not openly endorse any candidate, its words suggest fatigue with Museveni’s long rule and optimism about Bobi Wine’s challenge.

As the election date draws closer, Ugandans and the world are watching closely.

Will the long-serving president tighten his grip on power once again, or will the youth-driven wave behind Bobi Wine finally bring change?
