Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has raised questions over President William Ruto’s recent call for new legislation that could see drug traffickers sentenced to death, describing the move as long overdue yet politically selective.

Njiru questioned why the president has only now publicly acknowledged the growing drug trafficking networks along the Kenyan coast.

Speaking on X, Njiru highlighted the need for clarity on the alleged links between local drug syndicates and the global Minnesota money laundering scandal.

“What is the nexus between the coastal drug trade, Venezuela’s political-economic situation, and the Americans’ sudden interest in the Minnesota syndicate?” Njiru asked.

He added that the silence from the Asset Recovery Agency on the matter raises further suspicions.

Njiru also questioned whether Ruto is attempting to strategically distance himself from potential fallout after observing international repercussions faced by other leaders allegedly connected to drug or money laundering scandals.

“Is the president’s anti-drug push a genuine security measure, or is it a preemptive shield for his administration amid concerns over Kenya’s recent withdrawal as a non-nato ally?” he queried.

The lawyer further warned of possible consequences for Ruto’s international positioning if the Minnesota-linked money laundering allegations, reportedly involving billions in Eastleigh real estate, are linked to Kenya’s 2022 elections.

Njiru urged transparency, asking whether the purported funds influenced the campaign and who truly benefited.

“Before the chicken comes home to roost, the public deserves full disclosure,” Njiru concluded, urging the government to address both domestic drug trafficking and global financial crimes with equal urgency.

The remarks come as political analysts continue to debate whether Ruto’s proposed anti-drug laws signal a genuine crackdown or a politically calculated move amid intensifying scrutiny over high-profile financial scandals with potential links to the presidency.
