Bishop James Maria Wainaina Kungu has publicly urged three prominent Kenyan senators Nairobi's Edwin Sifuna, Nyandarua's John Methu, and Kiambu's Karungo Thang'wa to rise above partisan politics and advocate for the marginalized and voiceless segments of society.

Speaking at the Burial Ceremony of the James Gakuya's mother. The Bishop was on record saying that leaders have a major role to play in this country.

The bishop's remarks come amid escalating political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, where he has repeatedly expressed concerns over the country's direction under self-interested leadership.

Bishop Wainaina, who has been a vocal critic of incompetent governance in recent months, emphasized the need for ethical leadership rooted in moral values rather than personal gain.

"Our leaders must remember that their positions are not for self-enrichment but for serving the people, especially those who cannot speak for themselves the poor, the unemployed youth, and the forgotten rural communities," he stated.

He specifically named Senators Sifuna, Methu, and Thang'wa, highlighting their influence in the Mount Kenya region and beyond, and challenged them to use their platforms to address pressing issues like economic hardship, corruption, and political intolerance.

This call-out builds on the bishop's recent statements, where he urged Kenyans to scrutinize and "mark" incompetent leaders in the lead-up to 2027.

In a December 2025 address, he warned that early political campaigns and realignments were distracting from real governance, echoing sentiments from other church leaders like Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit, who accused the government of pushing citizens to the brink.

Catholic bishops nationwide have similarly called for an end to premature 2027 politicking, arguing it heightens tensions and neglects public needs.

Senator Edwin Sifuna, the outspoken ODM Secretary-General known for his fierce defense of opposition causes, has been involved in recent cross-party dialogues.

Just months ago, in July 2025, Sifuna publicly defended Senator Thang'wa after the latter issued a controversial apology related to the Ruto administration's policies.

Meanwhile, Senators Methu and Thang'wa, both representing counties in the Mount Kenya region, have been seen bridging divides; in October 2025, they paid a courtesy visit to a fellow senator across party lines, and in September, they were warmly received by veteran politician Dr. Oburu Odinga in Bondo.

Thang'wa, in particular, has accused Sifuna and other opposition figures of being "projects" of President Ruto, adding fuel to ongoing political rivalries.
