Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has received encouraging news regarding his political future, even if he decides to leave the ODM party ahead of the August 2027 general elections.
This development comes amid increasing speculation that Sifuna, known for his vocal opposition to the Broad-Based Government arrangements between President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza and the ODM, may be removed from his position as the party’s Secretary General.
Despite these uncertainties, lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has stated that Sifuna still has a strong chance of retaining his Nairobi senatorial seat, even without the backing of the ODM.
Njiru emphasized that Sifuna’s popularity and established support base in Nairobi give him a significant advantage over potential rivals, making him a formidable candidate regardless of party affiliation.
He added that if Sifuna were to join the United Opposition, this move would not weaken his prospects.
On the contrary, his strong connection with Nairobi residents and his consistent visibility in local politics would enable him to secure victory in the upcoming elections.
Njiru highlighted that Sifuna’s experience, reputation, and engagement with the electorate are key factors that could ensure he maintains his seat, demonstrating that individual political influence can sometimes outweigh party allegiance.
“Sifuna will still retain his seat if he joins the United Opposition. He is very popular and has a support base,” Njiru said, reinforcing the idea that the senator’s future remains promising despite internal party disputes.
This situation underscores the dynamic nature of Kenyan politics, where personal influence and grassroots support can play a decisive role in electoral outcomes, even when party positions shift or alliances change.
Sifuna’s ability to navigate these changes successfully could set a precedent for other politicians facing similar uncertainties in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.
