Former economic adviser to President William Ruto, Moses Kuria, has shifted his tone and publicly welcomed the president ahead of his planned visit to Nyeri County on Sunday, January 11, 2025.

In a message shared on social media on Saturday, Kuria posted a poster bearing his image alongside that of President Ruto, welcoming him to Nyeri County.

The visit will see the president attend the official opening and dedication of the ACL Kariki Plaza in Chinga Ward, Othaya.

The move comes after weeks of sharp criticism by Kuria against the president and his administration, raising questions about his political position.

The post sparked mixed reactions online. Some government-allied politicians praised Kuria’s gesture.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei welcomed the move and encouraged Kuria to align himself with the “TUTAM” political movement.

For months, Kuria had openly criticised President Ruto, saying he had lost trust in the current administration. Despite this, he stopped short of declaring allegiance to the opposition.

At one point, Kuria hinted that he could join a united opposition team, but later appeared to lean closer to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now one of President Ruto’s strongest critics.

In a recent interview, Kuria explained why he resigned from his role as the president’s economic adviser in July 2025.

He said the decision followed the government’s handling of the Gen Z protests during Saba Saba Day, where several young people were killed.

“I decided I could not be part of a government that handles protests in that manner,” Kuria said, adding that the events deeply disturbed him.

Rigathi Gachagua has since been vocal in his criticism of Kuria, at one point calling him a stooge of President Ruto.

He also dismissed Kuria’s Chama Cha Kazi party, saying it was being used by the state to weaken opposition support.

Gachagua made the remarks after Chama Cha Kazi fielded Duncan Mbui in the November 27 Mbeere North by-election, describing the party as an extension of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Kuria’s latest political shift comes as he openly declares interest in the Nairobi governorship in the 2027 General Election.

“It is Nairobi’s turn,” Kuria said, naming Makadara MP George Aladwa as his preferred running mate.
