Uganda’s veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye was rushed to hospital under heavy security on Tuesday night after his health reportedly deteriorated while in detention at Luzira Prison, sparking renewed concern among his supporters and rights groups.

In a statement issued on X, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) said it had received credible information indicating that Besigye was transferred overnight from Luzira to a medical facility at Bugolobi Village Mall.

The party described his condition as “critical and deteriorating,” raising questions about his treatment and access to medical care while in custody.

Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and longtime critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government, has been detained in Luzira amid ongoing political tensions.

His allies argue that his detention is unlawful and accuse authorities of disregarding both his constitutional rights and basic standards of medical dignity.

“It is a tragedy that a man who has dedicated his life to the health and freedom of others is being denied his own right to medical care,” the PFF said, placing responsibility for his well-being squarely on the state and prison authorities.

The party demanded that Besigye’s personal doctors and family be granted immediate and unrestricted access to him.

The PFF urged supporters and “lovers of freedom” to remain vigilant and keep Besigye in their prayers, pledging to release further updates as more information becomes available from its teams on the ground.
