Njoro Girls' High School in Nakuru County is closed for an unknown period after a student, Brenda Akinyi, died.

The closure follows protests by parents after the form four student passed away at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital

Upset parents and locals protested outside the school, calling for people to be held responsible.

Police arrived to control the crowd, and school officials said all students have been sent home while the death is investigated. A post-mortem is planned to find out what caused Brenda's death.

Brenda's family is questioning the care she received. Her mother, Millicent Anyango, said Brenda had been complaining of headaches for days, but the school nurse only gave her Brufen instead of getting her real medical help.

Her brother, Allan Otieno, added that the school didn't contact them quickly enough as her condition got worse.

She was sick for three days and couldn't eat, but all they gave her was Brufen, he said, shocked at the school's response.

The Nakuru County Director of Education denied any carelessness, mentioning Brenda's past health issues.

Still, some parents say other students have died in strange ways at the school, with three deaths in 2023.

The school will stay closed until things calm down and the investigation is done.

This sad event has started conversations about health procedures in schools and the need to act fast when students need medical attention so as to save lives.
