Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua faced a tense moment during a televised interview at his Wamunyoro home after a question about his alleged links with President William Ruto stirred visible frustration.

The former deputy president had been addressing a range of issues affecting both the Mt Kenya region and the country. He spoke about the economy, service delivery, and the direction of national politics. His tone remained calm and measured as he responded to most questions from the Inooro TV host.

The mood changed when the discussion turned to claims that he might still be quietly aligned with the president’s camp. Gachagua paused and stared at the interviewer for several seconds before responding. The silence in the room signaled that the question had struck a nerve.

He firmly distanced himself from Ruto and rejected any suggestion of cooperation. His voice grew sharper as he warned against what he considered attempts to link him to an administration he now openly opposes.

Gachagua went on to criticize the government’s performance. He argued that the economy has weakened and that many families are struggling with the rising cost of living. He also pointed to challenges in education and healthcare, saying public services have not improved as promised.

The DCP leader further expressed concern over the handling of protests, claiming that heavy police action has created fear among citizens. He said the country needs leadership that listens more and confronts problems directly.

Since his impeachment in October 2024, Gachagua has positioned himself as a key opposition figure. He has been meeting leaders across regions in an effort to build alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The heated exchange offered a glimpse into the deep political rift between the two former allies. It also showed a leader determined to chart a new path, even as the national political climate grows more charged.
