Edwin Sifuna has congratulated Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka on his appointment as the new leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition. The move follows the death of Raila Odinga in October 2025, which left a leadership gap in the opposition alliance. Sifuna reaffirmed that ODM remains a committed member of the coalition.

The coalition’s Council and National Executive Committee held a meeting on February 2, 2026, chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Kalonzo Musyoka, the Wiper Democratic Movement leader and former Vice President, was chosen to take over Raila Odinga’s role. Suba South MP Caroli Omondi was named Secretary-General, replacing Suna East MP Junet Mohamed. Philip Kisia was appointed Executive Director.

These changes have been officially notified to the Registrar of Political Parties. Analysts say the reshuffle aims to strengthen Azimio ahead of the 2027 general elections. The new leadership is expected to promote unity, cohesion, and a more organized approach to challenging President William Ruto’s government.

Sifuna praised Azimio for taking a careful approach in filling the leadership vacuum. He noted that the coalition did not rush to replace Raila Odinga, affectionately known as "Baba," immediately after his death. His remarks appeared to contrast the measured Azimio transition with internal debates within ODM.

Despite past tensions, Sifuna’s statement signals ODM’s readiness to support Kalonzo and the new team. He also thanked the coalition for handling the transition smoothly. This shows that key figures in ODM, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, continue to align with Uhuru’s firm opposition stance.

The leadership overhaul comes amid defections and disagreements within Azimio since Raila’s passing. Kalonzo’s appointment is expected to broaden the coalition’s appeal beyond ODM’s traditional strongholds. Experts say the move also reasserts Uhuru Kenyatta’s influence in guiding the opposition toward unity.

Some challenges remain. Parties like the National Liberal Party have called for transparency, and debates over coalition finances continue. However, with Kalonzo at the helm and ODM pledging support, Azimio hopes to present a united front in the lead-up to 2027.

The changes mark a critical moment in Kenyan politics. Opposition leaders are now focused on stabilizing Azimio, rebuilding trust among members, and preparing for what could be a decisive electoral battle against the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.
