A Mombasa businesswoman narrowly escaped serious injury after being shot by an armed man during an attempted theft at her home on the night of March 17, 2026.

Police in Kilifi South Sub-County are investigating the case, which left the woman hurt but prevented any property from being stolen.

The victim had just returned from Mwembe Tayari in Mombasa, where she operates an MPESA business, when she was confronted by the suspect at the gate of her residence in Kenya Project Estate.

Reports indicate that as the night guard prepared to open the gate, the assailant tried to stop her, but she refused and drove her Toyota Probox away from the scene, according to police.

The attacker then fired a shot through the driver’s side window, breaking the glass and windscreen.

The woman suffered cuts to her right cheek and forehead, likely from the shattered glass.

Neighbours responded after she screamed for help.

She was first taken to Mtwapa Sub-County Hospital before being transferred to Coast General Hospital for specialised treatment.

Authorities acted quickly, recovering a spent bullet casing at the scene. Investigators secured the area and are continuing efforts to apprehend the suspect.

Police have urged the community to remain alert and report any suspicious behaviour.

Local officials promised that the person responsible would be brought to justice, while residents expressed shock at the incident, highlighting concerns over rising insecurity in the area.
