Tension gripped Siaya County on Tuesday as Governor James Orengo was unexpectedly heckled by a section of residents while addressing a public gathering attended by President William Ruto.
The incident occurred during the high-profile groundbreaking of the Usenge Beach Pier, a flagship project aimed at unlocking the economic potential of Lake Victoria and transforming livelihoods in the lakeside region.
The project is expected to boost trade, tourism, and fishing activities, offering new opportunities for local communities.
President Ruto, flanked by several local leaders, had emphasised the importance of giving county officials a platform to engage with residents. In a move to encourage dialogue, he invited Governor Orengo to address the gathering first.
However, the moment Orengo began speaking, parts of the crowd erupted into jeers and interruptions, forcing him to cut short his remarks.
Witnesses described a tense atmosphere, with some residents chanting and expressing frustration, while others tried to calm the situation.
The governor’s abrupt departure from the podium left attendees and officials momentarily unsettled.
Orengo’s reception comes amid his rising prominence within the “Linda Mwananchi” faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which has consistently criticised the President William Ruto-led regime and opposed his re-election bid ahead of 2027.
President Ruto, who maintained a composed presence throughout, later addressed the crowd, highlighting ongoing and upcoming projects in the county.
He reiterated his commitment to working with local leaders to ensure that development initiatives directly benefit residents, including improvements in infrastructure, fisheries, and tourism facilities around Lake Victoria.
