Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has indicated that the United Opposition may soon join forces with Edwin Sifuna and his Linda Mwananchi movement as political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections continue to take shape.
Speaking to Meru-based radio stations on Friday, March 7, 2026, Gachagua said the two formations share a common political vision and could soon sit down to chart a joint strategy.
According to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader, both camps subscribe to the popular “Wantam” slogan, which calls for President William Ruto to serve only one term in office.
Gachagua maintained that the shared political objective makes collaboration between the two camps inevitable.
He insisted that public displays of unity were not necessary, arguing that what matters most is their commitment to a common goal of unseating the current administration.
He described the faction allied to Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino as the “genuine ODM”, claiming the group has remained firmly opposed to Ruto’s leadership.
At the same time, Gachagua argued that the Orange Democratic Movement is currently fragmented into four factions.
According to him, one faction remains loyal to party leader Raila Odinga—whom he claimed could back Ruto in 2027—while another faction is linked to Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho.
He further alleged that a third faction associated with former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya may eventually break away to form a new political outfit.
The remarks come shortly after Sifuna hinted that the Linda Mwananchi movement could work with other opposition leaders if it becomes necessary to defeat Ruto in the next election.
Sifuna recently said any serious challenge to the president would require a united front to avoid splitting the opposition vote. He emphasized that his movement would not participate in political arrangements that weaken the broader push for change.
Gachagua also suggested that if the Linda Mwananchi team produces a strong presidential candidate, the opposition could rally behind them, even mentioning Siaya Governor James Orengo as a potential leader capable of carrying the coalition’s aspirations.
