The political dominance of Kalonzo Musyoka in the Ukambani region is increasingly being tested as leaders allied to William Ruto intensify their presence and mobilisation efforts in the area.
For years, Ukambani, which comprises Machakos, Kitui and Makueni counties, has been widely regarded as Kalonzo’s political stronghold.
The Wiper Democratic Movement leader has historically enjoyed overwhelming support from the region, especially during national elections where he played a key role in opposition politics.
Kalonzo built much of his political influence while working alongside Raila Odinga in previous election cycles. He served as Raila’s running mate in the 2013, 2017 and 2022 presidential elections, helping consolidate Ukambani votes within the opposition coalition.
However, the political dynamics in the region appear to be gradually shifting as several influential leaders from Ukambani align themselves with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Among the most prominent figures supporting President Ruto’s camp are Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza, former Machakos senator Johnstone Muthama and former Nairobi deputy governor Jonathan Mueke. These leaders have been actively mobilising support for the government within the Lower Eastern region.
Their growing presence has raised questions about whether Kalonzo will continue to maintain the level of political control he has enjoyed in the region for decades.
Recent political engagements have also highlighted the changing landscape. Delegations of leaders from the Ukambani region have reportedly held meetings with President Ruto at State House, signalling closer cooperation with the national government.
Political observers say these interactions suggest that some regional leaders are keen to strengthen ties with the ruling administration, particularly as development and national political alignments continue to shape local politics.
At the same time, new political voices are emerging in Ukambani, further contributing to the evolving political environment. One of the leaders gaining attention is Augustus Kyalo Muli, the leader of the National Liberation Party.
Muli has been working to build grassroots support in the region and position himself as an alternative political voice.
Analysts believe that the emergence of additional leaders could gradually diversify political loyalty in Ukambani, a region that has traditionally voted largely as a bloc.
Despite these developments, Kalonzo remains one of the most experienced politicians in Kenya and still commands considerable influence among voters in the region.
His supporters argue that his long political career and consistent representation of Ukambani interests at the national level continue to resonate with many residents.
As the country slowly begins to look ahead to the 2027 General Election, political competition in the Lower Eastern region is expected to intensify.
The activities of pro government leaders and emerging political figures suggest that Ukambani could become one of the key battlegrounds shaping future political alliances.
Whether Kalonzo will successfully maintain his traditional support base or face stronger competition from rival camps remains a significant question as Kenya’s political landscape continues to evolve.
