James Orengo has defended his visit to State House Nairobi last year despite being a vocal critic of the national government. The Siaya governor said the meeting was guided by his constitutional responsibility to serve residents.
Orengo made the remarks during an interview on Spice FM on Thursday. He explained that engaging the national government does not automatically mean political alignment.
The governor had visited State House in November together with several Siaya County officials. The meeting was hosted by William Ruto and attended by Members of the County Assembly.
The visit sparked debate because Orengo has consistently criticised the current administration. Some political observers questioned whether the meeting signaled a change in his stance.
However, the governor dismissed those claims and insisted his political position remains unchanged. He said leaders must separate party politics from their constitutional obligations.
According to Orengo, governors must work with the national government to deliver services. He argued that county development often depends on cooperation between the two levels of government.
He added that the Constitution encourages consultation and collaboration between national and county administrations. Therefore, engaging the presidency should not be viewed as betrayal of political ideals.
Orengo noted that decisions made at the national level directly affect counties. He said failing to engage with the national government could disadvantage residents.
At the same time, the governor warned about what he described as the gradual return of an imperial presidency. He cautioned that many leaders are increasingly visiting State House in search of political favors.
He stressed that such practices could weaken accountability and undermine democratic principles. According to him, leaders must defend fairness and transparency in the sharing of national resources.
Orengo maintained that his priority remains protecting devolution and ensuring counties receive adequate funding. He insisted that constructive engagement with the national government is sometimes necessary.
The governor concluded that cooperation between institutions should not be mistaken for political surrender. He said his focus will remain on improving services for the people of Siaya County.
