Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked fresh political debate after making strong remarks against President William Ruto during a televised address targeting the Luo community.

Speaking through a local TV station on Wednesday night, Gachagua openly admitted that supporting Ruto in the 2022 General Election was a mistake.

In his remarks, he said he had been “stupid enough” to back Ruto at a time when other regions had allegedly rejected his candidacy.
According to Gachagua, the Mt Kenya region played a major role in delivering victory, only to feel sidelined later.

He claimed that the support from Mt Kenya voters was genuine and decisive, but what followed after the election was betrayal. Gachagua argued that promises made to the region were not fulfilled, leading to growing dissatisfaction among leaders and residents.

In a direct appeal to the Luo community in Nyanza, Gachagua warned them to be cautious in their political choices. He urged them not to repeat what he described as the “mistake” made by Mt Kenya voters. He emphasized that political alliances should be based on trust and accountability, not empty promises.

The remarks are likely to intensify political tensions across the country, especially as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of future elections. Gachagua’s statements also signal a deepening fallout between him and the current administration.

Political analysts say such public admissions are rare and could influence public opinion, particularly in regions that have historically been in opposition. However, critics argue that the comments may further divide communities instead of promoting unity.

As the political landscape continues to shift, Gachagua’s message to Nyanza adds a new dimension to Kenya’s evolving political discourse.
