A fresh political conversation has erupted online after lawyer Wahome Thuku shared a thought-provoking scenario about what Kenya’s political landscape might look like today if the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had never gone through.

Thuku invited Kenyans to imagine a moment when the Senate was preparing to begin the impeachment proceedings, suggesting that if President William Ruto and the late and Former ODM boss, former Broad-Based Government partner Raila Odinga, Ruto's ally Raila Odinga who recently died in India and buried like a king despite not occupying presidential office had intervened and asked senators to drop the process, the political narrative in the country could be completely different today.

According to Thuku’s reflections, such a move would have dramatically changed the tone of national politics, especially around leadership accountability and public expectations.

He suggested that the country might now be hearing very different explanations from the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua if the impeachment process had collapsed before reaching its conclusion.

The lawyer further painted a vivid picture of the kind of political messaging that could have followed.

In his view, Kenyans might have been hearing repeated explanations from political platforms, churches and roadside rallies about why the government needed more time to deliver on promises.

The remarks quickly attracted attention on social media, where Kenyans began debating whether the impeachment changed the trajectory of the country’s leadership politics. Some argued that the process reshaped the balance of power within the ruling administration, while others questioned whether the political tension between leaders would have escalated if the removal attempt had failed.

Observers following the conversation also noted that the removal of the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua marked one of the most dramatic turning points in Kenya’s recent political history, setting the stage for Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to rise to the powerful position of second in command.

As discussions continue across political spaces, Thuku’s hypothetical scenario has reminded many Kenyans how a single political decision inside Parliament can shift the direction of national politics in ways few people initially expect.
